Gmail: application specific password

We recommend users to use the Gmail-app on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets (downloadable via the Google Playstore or the Appstore). In that case, you won’t have to use this manual.

If you use an application (other than the standard Gmail application) to view your UU-Gmail that does not support two factor authentication, you will have to set a password in UU-Gmail. This is called an “application specific password”. This manual describes how to do this for your studentmail.

  • You need to follow this instruction guide if:

    • you use the IMAP-protocol
    • you use mailclients like Mozilla Thunderbird

You do NOT need this if you:

    • Use the standard Gmail app from Google Play/Appstore (highly recommended)

  • To begin with you will have to enable “2-Step Verification”. Have you already done this? Then you can skip to step 8.

  • Step 1

    Login to you UU-Gmail.

Next click the “Google Apps” icon and then on “My Account”.

  • Step 2

    Click “Sign-in & Security”.

  • Step 3

    Click “2-Step Verification”.

  • Step 4

    Click “GET STARTED”.

  • Step 5

Enter your mobile phone number and click “TRY IT”.

  • Step 6

A verification message will be sent to your mobile phone. It can take a little while for the message to arrive. This message will contain a code.

Enter the code you have received in the message and click “NEXT”.

  • Step 7

You will now see a phone with a green tick to indicate that the verification was successful. At the bottom click “TURN ON”.

  • The remainder of this manual will describe how to set an “application specific password”.

  • Step 8

If you haven’t done so login to your UU-Gmailand click the “Google Apps” icon and then “My Account”.

    Click “App Passwords”.

  • Step 9

Next you will have to choose 2 things. First the App (Select App) that you want to use and next the device (Select device) on which you want to open your UU-Gmail..

For example: Mail on my Windows Computer if you want to use Mozilla Thunderbird on your Windows computer.

    Next click “GENERATE”.

  • Step 10

A new password will be displayed within the yellow rectangle.

This is the password you will have to enter in the application of your personal choice. Some possible instructions for use are displayed. If necessary consult the manual of your application for the specific steps for your application.

    Click “DONE” to finish.

  • Step 11

Do you want to make another application specific password for a different application? You can do so from this screen by simply repeating the previous three steps. When you are finished you can continue using your UU-Gmail or logout.
